When you glance at internet statistics UK, you can quickly see that UK internet access is fast, affordable and open to practically every single citizen of the United Kingdom. Internet statistics reflect that the world is truly their oyster, with no less than 82% of the population enjoying unfettered access with speeds of up to 100Mbps. Healthy competition is what drives the statistics even further, with no less than 63 companies offering high-speed broadband and/or landlines that make use of the excellent British cabling systems. The internet users in the UK have countless options to connect to their online lives: blazing-fast wireless via 3G or 4G, connecting their laptops to the endless source of Wi-Fi hotspots, standard wired connections via desktop computers and more!

The four main internet providers, Virgin Media and BT offer fiberoptic connections, while Sky and TalkTalk stick with trusted fixed-line DSL. Both BT and Virgin have helped to develop fairly balanced internet user statistics in the UK, with casual users, power-users, business users and everyone in-between all commanding a fairly even share of the internet penetration graph (as explained below).

Functional users – those who can use the internet in a basic form, but are not interested in applying it to their everyday lives account for 23% of the internet penetration statistics in the UK. Networkers account for 26% of the internet statistics and are social media butterflies that rely on the internet for constant communication on either their mobile or desktop/laptop computer. Facebook is their number one source of social networking, as it acquires over 25 million unique visitors on a monthly basis. Knowledge-seekers or those who use the internet to educate themselves, make up 16% of the internet penetration market – Google remains the most-accessed website in the UK, despite their being more Networkers then Knowledge-seekers. This poses the questions; was there life before Google? Clearly, Google is the reigning champion for all users, yet social networking and emailing remain as the most popular activities, sitting at 24% and 47% respectively.

A large internet user base (24%) is made up of Influencers. This yet again proves the strength of the UK internet market, as Influencers are constantly connected to the internet. They are the users that trust in online shopping, use social media to attract others to the internet, and actively work to integrate the web into every facet of their lives.

Google continues to be the most widely visited website by people logging on to the Internet using their personal desktop computers. This may be due to the simplicity of the Google homepage or simply the fact that the Google search is as good a place to start online as any.

On mobile Internet in the United Kingdom, the BBC News is the most trafficked website. Currently, over one quarter of all mobile internet consumers are using BBC News as the homepage for their mobile computing. BBC News is followed by BBC Weather and Sky Sports in popularity as mobile internet portals. Analysis by Nielson Online reports that the primary purpose and use of mobile Internet connectivity is for information relative to immediacy.

Generally, people desire fast, almost instantaneous access to weather and sports news. The simplicity of handheld mobile devices supports this perfectly. The majority of leading mobile sites are made up of weather, sports, general news and email access applications.

The basis for this popularity may also be traced to the ease of functionality these topics allow, as opposed to entertainment and e-commerce requiring more sophisticated and complex download capability. 25% of the mobile Internet audience ranges in age from fifteen to twenty-four, compared to 16% in that age bracket for desktop PC users. Only 12% of mobile Internet users are age 55 or older.

What is Search Engine Optimization?
Search engine optimization is such a critical component of today’s effective Internet marketing. Search engine optimization is the process of making a website search engine friendly so that it can rank well on search engine rankings. Both on page and off page optimization can be implemented in search engine optimization technique.
On page optimization may be defined as follows:
Content Optimization: Content plays an important role for a website in order to get top search engine ranking. Content is the king. So good quality content sites always have upper hand getting top position on Google, Yahoo, and MSN, or other popular search engines.
Meta Tag Composition: Meta tag is one of the most important points of promoting a website through popular search engines. It is necessary putting targeted keywords in the Meta tags for two or three times. It will help search engine spider understand about the page. But ensure that your Meta description is not too long as search engines do not like more than 250 characters in the Meta Description tag. Meta Keyword tag is another important part of Meta tag. You should put your targeted keywords in the Meta keyword tags.
Title Tags: Title tag is the single most important factor, which determines a site’s ranking on the search engines. Title tag therefore needs to be carefully constructed in such a way that it increases your website’s position in the SERP, and it is attractive enough to encourage a surfer to click on your link. You should keep one thing in your mind that title would not be too long as Google takes only 68 characters in the title tag whereas Yahoo takes upto 120 characters.
Search engine sitemap: It is an xml file contains all the files of the site. This xml file should be uploaded on the root directory of the site. With search engine sitemap you can automatically keep the search engines informed of all your web pages, and when you make changes to these pages to help improve your coverage in the search engine’s crawl.
Robots.TXT The Robots.txt file is used to define to the search engines what web pages you want them to index and what pages you don’t. As a search engine spider begins a crawl of your site, the Robots.txt file is the first place they look at for, a fast and easy way of finding the web pages they need to crawl. Having a Robots.txt implemented in your site also speeds up the process in which your website is crawled by the search engines.
Off page optimization: The main purpose of off page optimization is to increase link popularity for your website. It can done through one-way linking, two-way (reciprocal) linking or three way linking process. Through all these strategies, your site’s link would be placed on other sites that will help in increasing traffic to your site.
